God Is Our King!

Memory verse – One day Jesus was praying in a certain place. When He finished, one of His disciples said to Him, “Lord, teach us to pray…” Luke 11:1

For the next part of the teaching on prayer, let’s look at Matthew 6:10. Jesus says to His Father: “Bring your kingdom to earth.” God is King and we are His children, so we are part of His kingdom! That means we listen to Him and do the stuff He wants us to do.

Have you seen that in all the parts of this teaching on prayer, Jesus is talking with a group of people, not just one person? We need to remember that when we pray, we are praying for other people as well as ourselves. A king has many people in his kingdom!

Action and Prayer points – Today as you talk with God; talk with Him about people that you want to be part of His kingdom. And thank Him for bringing His kingdom to earth so that you and I and all His children can be part of it!

Our Father Is In Heaven

Memory verse – One day Jesus was praying in a certain place. When He finished, one of His disciples said to Him, “Lord, teach us to pray…” Luke 11:1

This next part of praying is more easily understood if we look at Matthew 6:9. Jesus instructs His disciples to speak to their Father in heaven.

Our Father’s throne is in heaven,[1] and it is there we are to direct our prayers. In Revelation, the very last book of the Bible, we see that John is given a glimpse of thousands of angels singing praises to God and to Jesus Then, in verse 13, everyone is singing to the Lord and to the Lamb![2]

Heaven is a very real place where God reigns and one day, we will reign with Him. As we learn to pray, honoring Him as our Father and our Lord, we will become more familiar with the spiritual side of life and will begin to hear His voice as He teaches us how to become more like Him!

  • Take some time right now to sing praises to Him!

Honor God As Father

Memory verse – One day Jesus was praying in a certain place. When He finished, one of His disciples said to Him, “Lord, teach us to pray…” Luke 11:1

As we are learning how to pray and asking God to show us, we can look in His Word also to learn. Let’s look in Luke 11:2, as Jesus responds to the request made by one of His disciples.

The first thing Jesus says is that we should say “Father.” This may seem obvious, but addressing God as Father shows that we know who He is to us. We are His children! He loves us and wants to have a relationship with us and wants us to get to know Him.

Calling Him Father also shows honor to Him. When we talk with other people, we will say their name so that they know we are talking to them. It is a way of showing honor. It is the same with God. He made us, and everything for us, so how much more should we honor Him!

Action point – You may want to look up the word “Father” on Biblegateway.com and see how many times it refers to God in both the Old Testament and New Testament.

Talking With Our Father

Memory verse – One day Jesus was praying in a certain place. When He finished, one of His disciples said to Him, “Lord, teach us to pray…” Luke 11:1

One day Jesus’ disciples asked Him to teach them to pray. They knew He spent much time in prayer.[1] They knew that He heard from His Father when He prayed.[2] They wanted to know how they could talk to their heavenly Father, and so they asked His Son to teach them.

When we remember that Adam and Eve could talk to God in the Garden of Eden, and that He wants us to be able to talk with Him, then it follows that we should ask Him to teach us how to talk with Him.

Action and Prayer point – Today, won’t you ask Jesus to teach you how to talk and pray with your heavenly Father?

Teach Us To Pray

Memory verse – One day Jesus was praying in a certain place. When He finished, one of His disciples said to Him, “Lord, teach us to pray…” Luke 11:1

If you asked forgiveness for your sins, turned from sin and turned to Jesus, believing that He died for your sins, you are now a Christian and part of the family of God, one of God’s children!

And now that you are a child of God, you will want to get to know your Father and His Son, Jesus, a lot better. Remember how He provided everything for our needs back in Genesis when He created the world and all the things in it? He has also made a way for us to get to know Him and His Son.

When Jesus died on the cross, a huge curtain (called the “veil”) in the temple, was ripped top to bottom to show that we could now go into the Most Holy Place and talk with God.[1] In the Old Testament, only the High Priest could go into the Most Holy Place and talk with God; then he would tell the people what God said. Since Jesus’ death and resurrection, we no longer have to depend on another person to tell us what God says.[2] When Jesus went up into heaven, He sat down at God’s right hand to intercede for us.  So now we can go into the Most Holy Place in our spirits and talk with God. God calls it prayer, and He wants us to talk or pray with Him, all the time, about everything!

When we talk with God, we are free to discuss everything with Him; however, there is a certain way we need to approach Him as we pray. We will be looking at this way in the next several lessons.

[1] Luke 23:44-46

[2] We are not saying here that we don’t listen to others and take their advice or ask for counsel. Certainly there is great wisdom in seeking godly counsel and indeed, we should. But we do not depend on others’ Christian lives to get to know God, because He has given us direct access to Himself! Check out Hebrews 4:14-16.

Review

Memory verseFor God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16

Let’s review what God has done to bring us back to Him.

The Bible says in Romans 3:23: for _________ have sinned and fall short of the glory of God…

To be saved from sin and live forever with God, you must receive God’s gift of salvation and forgiveness of sin, and be born again. You must give up your life to Jesus as Lord. How do you receive?

1. Believe the ___________ of God (Romans 10:9-10).

2. Turn from _________ own way (Acts 3:19).

3. Give your ________ to Jesus (1 Peter 2:25). Make Him your Lord!

If you haven’t already done this, you can do this now. Here’s a prayer you could use:

“Lord Jesus, I give my life to you. I believe you died for me on the cross and rose again on the third day. I believe you are God. I turn from my own way and I give you my life now. I ask you to be the Lord of my life. Thank you for dying for me. Thank you for forgiving me of all my sin.  Thank you for making me born again. Thank you for saving me. I am now your child. I am now saved. I am now a Christian. And I will serve you, Lord Jesus, all the days of my life.  Amen.”

Become Part Of The Church

Memory verseFor God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16

When you give your life to Jesus by believing God’s Word, turning from your sins and turning to Him by giving Him your heart, God will place you in a community of other people who know Him. You may already be attending a church, now begin asking God to show you how to be part of your church.

Together, we can know Him in a much greater way. We can help one another, serve one another and grow together (Heb. 10:24-25).

Look at Acts 2:42-47.

Þ    What things did the people do when they met together?

Þ    List what you see:

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Think about these different things the people did. They were getting to know God together and helping each other grow in Him!

Action and Prayer points – Now, thank God for bringing you to Him so that you can get to know Him. And if He has already put you in a group of people that know Him, be sure to thank Him for this, too! If He has not, ask Him now!

Make Jesus Lord

Memory verseFor God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16

Now that you have believed what God’s Word says, now that you have turned from your sins, now that you have asked His forgiveness and turned to Him, you must make Him Lord of your life.[1] That means you put Him first in everything and you do the things He wants you to do.

What things are you going to be doing today? As you think about them, talk to Jesus and ask Him how He wants you to do them. Then, do them His way. Sometimes He even tells us to replace something we were going to do with something better. Look at John 8:26-29. Here Jesus is talking about His Father, God, and how He puts Him first.

Action and Prayer points – Let’s end the lesson today by thanking Jesus for giving His life for us so that we could be saved from our sins. Maybe you want to sing to Him and praise Him, too!

Believe That Jesus Is Lord

Memory verseFor God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16

How do we receive what Jesus did for us when He died on the cross to pay for our sins?

First, we have to believe that what God says in His Word, the Bible, is true. God said in Romans 3:23 that we all have sinned. Once we realize that we are sinners, we must repent,[1] or change our minds about wanting to sin any more, and turn to God and live His way.

Then, after we have repented, we need to confess or admit our sins to God and ask His forgiveness, and He will forgive us and begin changing our hearts so that we become more like Him.[2]

Do you want to do this right now? Here’s a prayer you could use:

“Lord Jesus, I give my life to you. I believe you died for me on the cross and rose again on the third day. I believe you are God. I turn from my own way and I give you my life now. I ask you to be the Lord of my life. Thank you for dying for me. Thank you for forgiving me of all my sin.  Thank you for making me born again. Thank you for saving me. I am now your child. I am now saved. I am now a Christian. And I will serve you, Lord Jesus, all the days of my life.  Amen.”

Jesus Pays For Our Sin

Memory verseFor God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16

What can you do to get back with God?

Look at the memory verse you’ve been working on the past couple of lessons.

Because God loves you, He sent His Son Jesus to die on the cross in your place, to take the punishment for your sin so you could be free. And because Jesus is God’s Son, He is holy and without sin. Therefore, He paid for your sin with His own life so you don’t have to. The price has been paid so you can be free![1]

So what must you do with what Jesus did for you?

You must receive God’s gift of salvation and forgiveness of sin, and be born again. You must give up your life to Jesus as Lord. How do you receive?

1. Believe the Word of God (Romans 10:9-10).

2. Turn from your own way (Acts 3:19).

3. Give your life to Jesus (1 Peter 2:25). Make Him your Lord!

We will talk about this in more detail in the next two lessons.
